Triggered

Have you ever found yourself in a situation that seemed strangely familiar and you secretly thought to yourself “not this again!”.

It could be that you meet a new person and their mannerisms remind you of somebody else that you had a confrontation with in the past, therefore you experience some resistance when talking to this new person.

The new person may have done nothing at all, yet somehow, they provoke rejection in you.  What if it has nothing to do with them but rather it is about you and your story?

Do not worry. It’s perfectly natural.

There’s nothing wrong with you.

Reactions provoked by familiar situations can help us understand and learn something deeper about ourselves.

Side note: if you have experienced trauma and certain events are triggering deep anxiety and panic please see a trauma specialist that will support you.

How these events can be helpful.

Healing comes in stages. Once one layer of your story is healed, then a while later the next layer reveals itself. Instead of resenting the process, my suggestion is bringing in curiosity.

Notice when the feeling comes up and be curious; what is it trying to tell you?

Have you felt this way before?

How did you respond then?

How could you respond differently now?

And will it serve you and the situation to respond differently?

Remember, all feelings are valid.

Recognise them, work through them, learn from them and release them.
